Christina pushed open the door to Mounira’s bedroom. It was a mess. There were clothes on the floor, drawers half-open, and the wardrobe doors still swung gently.

“Angelina’s effective, I’ll give her that.”

Dropping her backpack, she quickly ran a hand under the bed and then under and behind the dresser.

Satisfied that she hadn’t missed any secrets Mounira might have been hiding, Christina stripped the bed sheets and tied them together. Opening the window, she then secured the sheet-rope around the bed frame and left the rope in a curl on the bed.

“Always best to prepare an emergency exit, just in case.” Picking up her backpack, she closed the door and headed down the hallway, one hand running along the wall.

At the sound of voices approaching from around the corner, she froze, looking back the way she’d come. There were a dozen dormitory doors between her and Mounira’s room.

Thinking about it, going down the sheets to get outside would be risky in broad daylight. I should have thought of that earlier. I need a better plan.

She glanced at the doorknobs of the other dorm rooms in the corridor. I don’t have time to go room to room hoping to find an open one. And if someone’s in there? Too risky.

Clenching her teeth, she remembered the grey-hooded cloak she kept hidden under her bed, a present given to her by the former deputy leader. How can you be so rusty at this stuff? There’s no time to go back for it now. And if the Moufan see you running, they’ll know something’s up. Think, and later, I need to get back to being the squirrel: always prepared and paranoid.

She closed her eyes and listened to what the approaching Moufan-Men were discussing. A smile crossed her lips as she figured out the context. Reaffirming her grip on the backpack, she lifted her head high and moved with purpose around the corner.

“You’re on the wrong floor,” she said, pointing at one of the two women in grey robes, their hoods back.

“Pardon?” the shorter of the two replied.

“They moved the wine room up a floor after one of Rumpere’s lieutenants almost found it.” Christina stopped and frowned at them as they stared at her completely confused. “That is what you’re looking for, isn’t it? You’re just done with a fighting test, right?”

The Moufan women glanced down at themselves. “How did you know?” asked the shorter one.

Christina pointed. “Blood stains and you’ve got a fat lip. You’re missing your sashes, but there are still a lot of red fibers from your practice ones.”

“Oh.”

“You’ve earned the break, so I just assumed you were going to indulge in a little contraband like the others.”

The other woman glanced at her friend and then at Christina. “How do you know about all of this? Moufan aren’t allowed to drink alcohol.”

“Why have a xenia at the compound if not to get it? The term means foreign friend for a reason.” Christina subtly bit her lip. I can’t believe I just said that. Still, it’s better than having to fight them.
